I’m the Most Important Politician from the South-East, Not Peter Obi — Orji Kalu Declares

Former Abia State Governor and Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared himself the most influential politician from Nigeria’s South-East region, dismissing claims that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, holds that position.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu downplayed Obi’s political significance in the region, insisting that his own political record and accomplishments far outweigh Obi’s.

“He (Obi) is not my leader. I am the most important politician from that zone,” Kalu said confidently.

The former governor highlighted his political achievements under the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), recalling how he won two states and secured over 4.9 million votes in the 2007 presidential election.

“I ran for president before, and my 4.9 million votes in 2007 are still there. We achieved a lot with PPA — we had ministers, ambassadors, and other key appointments under President Yar’Adua,” he added.

When asked about his future political plans, Kalu said he remains open to running for president if given the opportunity, emphasizing that competence, not age, should determine leadership potential.

“If I’m healthy and God gives me life, I can still contest. The question is not age — it’s competency. It’s about what is in my brain and what I can deliver,” he stated.

Responding to whether he believes Igbos should unite behind Peter Obi in future elections, Kalu refrained from a direct endorsement, instead reiterating his long-standing political influence and experience as a major figure in the region.
