PGMOL Appalled by Abuse
The governing body responsible for refereeing, PGMOL, has expressed deep concern and condemnation over the "unjustified and abhorrent" abuse directed at Anthony Taylor. Disturbing video footage emerged showing Taylor and his family being accosted by angry fans at Budapest Airport, following his refereeing of the Europa League final between Roma and Sevilla.
During a post-match press conference, Roma manager Jose Mourinho criticized Taylor's performance, and additional social media footage showed Mourinho gesticulating at Taylor and other officials in the stadium car park, accompanied by the word "disgrace."
In response to the airport incident, PGMOL released a statement on Thursday evening, stating, "PGMOL is aware of circulating videos on social media depicting the harassment and abuse suffered by Anthony Taylor and his family at Budapest Airport. We are appalled by the unwarranted and repugnant abuse targeted at Anthony and his family as they try to return home following the UEFA Europa League final. We will continue to provide our complete support to Anthony and his family."
UEFA is currently awaiting Taylor's reports before determining whether any action should be taken against Mourinho for his outburst during the match. Taylor had booked Mourinho during the game, which ended 1-1 after extra time, ultimately leading to Sevilla's victory with a 4-1 penalty shootout.
The final itself was marred by heated tensions on and off the pitch, with a disappointing display that saw 13 players receive yellow cards, seven of which were issued to Roma players. The fourth official, Michael Oliver, faced challenges in maintaining control over both dug-outs. The game was further plagued by numerous delays, resulting in a total of 25 minutes of added stoppage time on top of the initial 120 minutes of playing time
