Rodrygo Rescues Madrid

Rodrygo's clinical brace propelled Real Madrid to a remarkable 2-1 comeback victory over 10-man Sevilla in LaLiga on Saturday. Despite the absence of Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior, Carlo Ancelotti's side showcased their resilience and tightened their grip on second place in the league standings at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.

In an eventful first half in Andalusia, Rafa Mir struck early to give Sevilla the lead in the third minute, capitalizing on Bryan Gil's deflected shot. However, Rodrygo squandered a golden opportunity to equalize shortly after, missing the target when unmarked from Lucas Vazquez's low cross. He quickly made amends, though, deceiving an unsighted Yassine Bounou with a superb 25-yard free-kick that nestled into the bottom-right corner in the 29th minute.

Sevilla had their own chances to take the lead before the break, with Erik Lamela hitting the post and lifting a back-post chance over the bar. However, it was Rodrygo who ultimately made the difference in the 69th minute. Coolly finishing a rapid counter-attack, he slid the ball into the bottom-right corner to secure the victory for Madrid. Sevilla's frustrations were compounded when Marcos Acuna was sent off for a reckless challenge on Vazquez.

With this win, Madrid extended their lead over rivals Atletico Madrid to four points, with Atletico set to face Real Sociedad on Sunday. Despite falling short in the Champions League semi-finals and losing ground in the title race to Barcelona, Madrid showed their determination by fighting back and finding a way to win.

Rodrygo's exceptional performance highlighted Madrid's resilience in the absence of key players. The Brazilian forward has now scored two braces in his last six games for the club, only one less than his previous tally of three in 152 appearances for Los Blancos.

However, defensive frailties continue to trouble Ancelotti's side, as they have conceded 41 goals across all competitions since the start of the year. Only Real Valladolid and Espanyol have conceded more among LaLiga teams.

Some key Opta facts from the match include Sevilla losing the most points (19) from winning positions in LaLiga this season, while Madrid have secured the second-highest number of points (13) from losing positions. Toni Kroos also set a LaLiga record for the highest number of passes attempted in a game this season, with 133 passes.

Looking ahead, Madrid will wrap up their LaLiga campaign by hosting Athletic Club on June 4. Meanwhile, Sevilla must quickly regroup as they prepare to face Roma in the Europa League final on Wednesday.
