Gundogan's Scoring Streak
Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan continued his impressive scoring run, netting two goals in Manchester City's 3-0 victory over Everton. The win brings City closer to clinching their fifth Premier League title in six seasons. With just three matches remaining, Pep Guardiola's team needs a maximum of six points to secure their hold on the championship trophy. The match at Goodison Park proved to be a comfortable outing for City.
Gundogan's stellar performance saw him increase his goal tally to four in the last two matches. His first goal was an exceptional over-the-shoulder volley, executed with precision. The second goal was a magnificent curling free-kick that soared over the wall into the net. Additionally, Erling Haaland contributed with a goal, marking his 52nd of the season. While Dixie Dean's record of 63 goals in a season is still within reach, Haaland's achievement of 36 league goals already places him as the highest scorer in the English top flight since Ron Davies' 37 goals in 1966-67. Remarkably, Haaland has scored 98 times in 100 league matches for Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City.
Despite making four changes to the lineup, City displayed their dominance and extended their unbeaten run to 21 games, securing their 11th consecutive league victory. The team hardly faced any challenges during the match. The substitution of injury-prone striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin at halftime raised concerns for Everton, who currently sit in 17th place in the league table. Everton now relies on Liverpool to prevent 19th-placed Leicester from securing victory in their upcoming match, as it would risk pushing Everton into the relegation zone.
The decision to replace Calvert-Lewin may have been a precautionary measure or an attempt to minimize potential damage, considering important matches against Wolves and a final-day encounter with Bournemouth. Calvert-Lewin, despite only scoring one goal in five games since his return from a hamstring injury, has been a crucial focal point for Everton.
City, on the other hand, have no such worries as their match against Everton served as a semi-competitive training session ahead of their crucial Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid. The previous encounter between City and Real ended in a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.
Everton adopted a deep-lying 4-5-1 formation, leaving Calvert-Lewin isolated from his midfield. Although Everton started energetically, buoyed by the hopeful Goodison Park crowd, their efforts mostly amounted to bluffs and were unable to create significant opportunities. Their best chance came in the 34th minute when Mason Holgate missed a difficult opportunity from close range after a knockdown by James Tarkowski.
City quickly took control of the game, scoring their first goal less than three minutes after Everton's chance. Within seven minutes, they doubled their lead, with Gundogan playing a crucial role in both goals. Gundogan's first goal involved a delicate touch on his thigh before executing a surprising shot with the outside of his right foot, leaving the marker and goalkeeper helpless. The second goal came from a cross by Gundogan after he capitalized on Patterson's weak header, allowing Haaland to rise above the makeshift left-back and head the ball home. Remarkably, it was Haaland's third touch of the game.
At halftime, Everton's slim chances of mounting a comeback were further diminished when Neal Maupay replaced Calvert-Lewin. Gundogan continued his impressive display by curling a free-kick into the net in the 51st minute after Phil Foden was brought down by James Garner. Everton shifted their focus to limiting the damage, and manager Sean Dyche opted to switch to a three-man defense
