Final Clash: Mourinho vs Sevilla

Roma manager Jose Mourinho expressed confidence ahead of the Europa League final against Sevilla in Budapest. Despite Sevilla's impressive record of six previous trophy wins in the competition, Mourinho believes their past successes will have little bearing on the outcome of the match.

The clash between the two teams has been dubbed "The Specialists against The Special One" by the Hungarian media, highlighting Mourinho's undefeated record in five major European finals as a manager. In contrast, Sevilla has won all six of their Europa League finals.

During a press conference, Mourinho acknowledged the history and reputation of Sevilla but emphasized that his team had earned their place in the final based on their performance. He respected the belief of his counterpart, Sevilla head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, who considered history to make Sevilla the favorites. However, Mourinho viewed the final as an extraordinary event for Roma, while for Sevilla, it was a more regular occurrence.

Mourinho, aiming to make history himself, aims to become the first manager to win the Europa League with three different clubs. He previously achieved success with Porto in 2003 and Manchester United in 2017. Recognizing the quality of both teams and their high-level players, Mourinho highlighted the coaching experience on his side while acknowledging Sevilla's players' familiarity with finals.

Reflecting on their journey to the final, Roma finished second in their Europa League qualifying group but overcame strong opponents such as RB Salzburg, Real Sociedad, and Feyenoord in the knockout rounds. In the semi-finals, they secured a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory against Bayer Leverkusen. Currently, Roma sits sixth in Serie A, and the potential return of Chris Smalling and Paulo Dybala's determination to contribute despite an ankle injury could provide a boost for the Italian side.

Sevilla head coach Mendilibar, who took charge of the team in March, has overseen a remarkable transformation. Taking over when the team was in a precarious position just above LaLiga's relegation zone, he has led them to 11th in the table with a comfortable 10-point gap from relegation. In their Europa League journey under Mendilibar, they eliminated strong opponents such as Manchester United and Juventus in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively.

Looking ahead to the final, Mendilibar emphasized the importance of minimizing mistakes. He believed that the team making the fewest errors on the night at the Puskas Arena would come out on top. Despite the challenges they have overcome so far, Mendilibar recognized the difficulty of the upcoming match and the need for his team to maintain focus and avoid costly errors.
